How do I become a celebrant?

There are different kinds of celebrants for all occasions. Please select the type of celebrant you wish to become:

Civil Marriage Celebrant
Funeral Celebrant
Name-giving Celebrant
Renewal of Vows Celebrant
Partnership & Commitment Celebrant
Other General Celebrant

Although professional training is not mandatory to perform all types of ceremonies, it is usually seen as evidence
that you have the skill, guidance and know-how to gain employment in all types of professional celebrancy work.


How do I become a Civil Marriage Celebrant?
To become a Civil Marriage Celebrant you must complete a nationally accredited course and be found to be a
'Fit and Proper Person' amongst other basic criteria. Please visit one of the websites below for more information
on the criteria and application process.

The below training organisations are authorised to provide the National Recognised Training Australia wide. These
training organisations have been found to meet industry
standards and have a track record in producing high quality
celebrants who also meet AAQC standards. The providers listed here have the most competitive fees and offer

How do I become a Funeral, Name-giving, Renewal of Vows, Partnership & Commitment or Other Celebrant?
These other ceremonies come under the title of general 'Civil Celebrant'. Anyone is able to perform these ceremonies
however training is highly recommended, as the right course can usually supply you with the following:

  a) The knowledge of where to go and who to speak to for obtaining immediate work in the industry.
  b) An understanding of ceremonial rituals and requirements for performing such ceremonies.
  c) Understanding of business requirements, and legislation supporting the performance of such ceremonies.
  d) A recognised qualification that is usually seen as evidence of competence in performing these other ceremonies.
  e) A resource kit/starter pack which you own, including poetry, business cards, royalty free ceremonies and more.
